How it works
Bank boletos have 47 digits split into fields, each with a modulus 10 check digit, plus a general modulus 11 digit over the barcode. Utility and tax slips (arrecadação) have 48 digits with their own rules. All of them are recalculated.
The amount and due date are read from the line itself. A valid line means it was typed correctly, not that the boleto is legitimate.
Questions
Can a fake boleto pass this check?
Yes. Fraudsters generate boletos with correct check digits. Always confirm that the beneficiary shown in your bank app matches who you intend to pay.
